Python Friday #28: Python Podcasts

I find podcasts an efficient way to learn more about a programming language. Not so much about the syntax or writing code itself, but about the tools, the ideas and the community. In todays post I give you a list of 5 podcasts I find interesting for Python developers.

This post is part of my journey to learn Python. You can find the other parts of this series here.

Test and Code was the first Python podcast I found. One of the main topics (besides Python) is testing. Brian Okken takes testing seriously and offers many helpful insights, that are not limited to Python. I like the episodes in which he explains concepts in more details often better than his discussions with guests.

Talk Python To Me is hosted by Michael Kennedy. I very much enjoy the discussions he has with his guests, because he is aware of his listeners and that they may be new to the topic. He makes sure that all the newly introduced concepts are explained and with that background info the episodes are easy to follow.

Python Bytes Michael and Brian do this podcast together. They talk about the topics that got into the headlines in the Python world. It is a weekly podcast that replaces hours of reading all the news pages and Twitter.

Real Python started in March and is the newest podcast in this list. The site RealPython.com offers great tutorials and the podcast keeps up to that reputation. The episodes are between 45 and 90 minutes in which Christopher Bailey talks to a guest. I especially like the web site to the episodes, in which you find a detailed list of topics they covered and when (down to the second). With that it is super easy to listen again to a topic.

Podcast.__init__ is the podcast I know the least about. I added this podcast only a few weeks ago to my list and I haven’t made up my mind yet. The episodes I listened to covered interesting topics, but I am struggling a bit with the way Tobias Macey asks questions. It lacks the flow of a discussion and gives the guests sometimes far too much space to talk about trivia.

That is my list for Python podcasts. What podcasts do you like and are missing here?
