How to Import Data From Web Sites Into Excel

Did you ever need to put a table from a web site into an Excel file? If so, you probably used copy & paste and then fixed all the formatting errors and wasted a lot of time.

There is another way you may not be aware of: Excel has an import feature to load data from web sites (and many more formats like PDF files).

Go to Data > Get Data > From Other Sources > From Web to open the import feature:

In the Data register you find the Get Data button at the left end of the ribbon

Excel opens a dialog where you can enter the URL of the web site with the data you need to import:

Enter the URL for the web site

As the next step you can choose the authentication method. If you do not need authentication, you can select Anonymous:

Choose the appropriate authentication method

Excel will now fetch the web site and shows you a list of all tables it could find. You can go through the list and check in the preview pane if this is the table you need:

Select the table you need

Click on Load and Excel will put the data from the web into your Excel sheet:

Excel has successfully imported the data from web to your file

The next time you need to import data, try the options Excel offers under Data > Get Data. It can save you a lot of time.
