What to Do if Your PC Can’t Project to Another Screen

I got a new work laptop, a Dell XPS with a lot of power. The machine is great, but it had one big problem. Whenever I tried to use an external screen, I got this error on Windows 10:

Your PC can't project to another screen. Try reinstalling the driver or use a different video card.

My Dell has two graphics cards; that is great for balancing performance and battery life, but not so great when you need to figure out which card has a problem. I deactivated one card after the other, reinstalled the drivers, checked the BIOS settings, installed the Dell Updater and even used the monitors at other desks – nothing worked.

It took me a while to check if the Intel processor has its own graphic card driver. And lo and behold, the I9 chip does. I downloaded the Intel Graphics – Windows* DCH Drivers package and run the installer.

After rebooting the laptop, I finally could use the external monitor.

Should you run into a similar problem, try to install the graphics driver for your CPU first. It sounds strange, but it may be exactly what is missing. At least in my case, the OEM Windows driver did not work and created that strange problem.
